1962 AL Game: Det. @ NY

May 26, 1962  See the source image

The Detroit Tigers, behind the superb pitching of Hank Aguirre, beat the New York Yankees 3-0 today, but it wasn't without a price. It was the 5th time in 5 meetings the Tigers have defeated the Yankees this year.  Aguirre, getting his first start of the season, went the distance allowing only 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 8. Norm Cash hit a 2-run homer in the 4th and Chico Fernandez hit a solo shot in the 5th to account for all Detroit's scoring. Now for the price the Tigers paid: In the 9th inning, Al Kaline made a diving catch on a flyball hit by Hector Lopez. It looked like Kaline injured himself on the play but he stayed in the game until Aguirre recorded the final out. We've just learned that Kaline broke his collarbone on the play and is expected to be out 6-8 weeks.

1962 NL Game: Cin. @ Hou.

May 23, 1962

Cincinnati's Bob Purkey's (9-1) first Loss of the 1962 season was a tough one to take. The Houston Colt 45's scored a run in the bottom of the 9th inning to win the tight contest 1-0. Purkey had been unbeatable until tonight and seemed to deserve a better fate after throwing an excellent ballgame. The Red's batters gave no support to their pitcher but credit has to be given to the Colt 45's Ken Johnson and Bobby Tiefenauer who teamed up for the victory.

1962 AL Standings

May 22, 1962

The Boston Red Sox have been on a roll, winning their last 8 in a row. The problem is the Red Sox got off to such a bad start this season that they're only 15-20 now.  The Minnesota Twins continue their winning ways and are in 1st place by 4.5 games over the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians. My Tigers hit a rough spot going 2-8 their last 10 games. The New York Yankees have been in a funk themselves, equaling Detroit's 2-8 stretch. The surprising Washington Senators have finally faltered a bit, dropping into 4th place after going 4-6 lately.

1962 AL Game: Det. @ Clv.

May 20, 1962

The Detroit Tigers finally put an end to their losing streak at 6 games by coming from behind to defeat the Cleveland Indians 6-3. Detroit starter Phil Regan pitched a good game until the Indians wrestled the lead away in the bottom of the 8th. Trailing 3-2, Tigers 1st baseman Norm Cash led off the 9th with a single. Rocky Colavito came to the plate next and smashed a 2-run homer, his 2nd homerun of the game. Detroit added 2 more runs in the 9th before Sam Jones came on to close the game out. It was a 6-3 streak ending victory for the Tigers.

Left fielder Rocky Colavito smashed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI at Municipal
Stadium as the Detroit Tigers came back dramatically to top the Cleveland
Indians by the score of 6 to 3.

Detroit came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning scoring 4
runners on 4 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Colavito who
disappointed the partisan crowd when he blasted a two-run home run. Detroit
had 7 hits for the afternoon.

Ron Nischwitz(2-0) allowed no runs in 2/3 of an inning, and picked up the
victory. Sam Jones recorded his 2nd save. Pedro Ramos(2-1) was hit with the
loss. He served up 3 gopher balls in 8 and 2/3 innings.

Mel McGaha was understandably not very talkative after his team's tough loss.
He quickly showered and changed and when asked about the game had a terse,
yet polite response, 'Hey fellows, that game was a heart-breaker to lose.
Our guys gave it their all and played well - fate just wasn't smilin' on us
this afternoon'

1962 Game Det. @ Clv.

May 19, 1962

The Detroit Tigers losing streak reached 6 games today as the Tigers dropped a 12-10 decision to the Cleveland Indians. The Tigers bats were connecting but their pitching failed in the high scoring game. Detroit battled back to take a 9-5 lead in the 6th inning and led 10-6 in the 7th. But Cleveland battled back themselves scoring 3 runs in the 7th and 3 in the 8th to take a 12-10 lead. The Tigers went down in order in the 9th and the Indians walked away with the win. Detroit banged out 16 hits in the game but 4 errors in the field and ineffective pitching let them down. Chuck Essegian hit 2 homeruns and drove in 4 while Frank Funk pitched 2 scoreless innings for the winning team.

Chuck Essegian cracked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Cleveland Indians
defeated the ice-cold Detroit Tigers by a score of 12 to 10 at Municipal
Stadium.

Essegian enjoyed a big day at the plate. He smacked a three-run homer in the
1st inning and smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in the 5th inning. Even
though they scored in 6 different innings, Detroit was not able to pull off
the win.

The victory was credited to Frank Funk(2-0) who went 2 innings, allowing no
runs. Ron Kline(1-1) was given the loss in relief.

1962 AL Game: Det. @ Clv.

May 18, 1962

My Detroit Tigers lost their 5th game in a row tonight in Cleveland. The Tigers jumped on Indian starter Dick Donovan for 2 runs in the 1st inning and added a run in the 6th but Paul Foytack and the Tiger bullpen couldn't hold on to the lead, eventually losing the game 4-3. Donovan went the distance for Cleveland in gaining his 5th Win of the season. It's the longest losing streak of the year for Detroit. The 1st place Minnesota Twins also lost last night to New York 6-0, so the 2nd place Tigers didn't lose any ground to the Twins. Detroit still trails Minnesota by 1 game.

1962 AL Game: Min. @ Det.

May 16, 1962

The Minnesota Twins battered the Detroit Tigers today 9-2. What began as the expected pitching duel between the Twin's Camilo Pascual and Detroit's Jim Bunning fell apart for the Tigers in the 4th inning. Minnesota put 3 runs on the scoreboard in the 4th and added 4 more in the 6th, chasing Bunning from the hill. Bob Allison hit 2 homeruns and Harmon Killebrew added 1 of his own to pace the Twin's 17 hit attack. Pascual went the distance for his 7th Win of the season, allowing only 6 hits and striking out 8. The few bright spots for the hometown Tiger fans came in the 7th inning when Dick McAuliffe hit an inside the park homerun and in the 9th when Norm Cash belted one into the upperdeck in rightfield.
With the victory the Twins moved past the Tigers into 1st place in the AL. For Detroit the loss was their 4th in a row, their longest losing streak of the season.

Right fielder Bob Allison blasted 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Camilo Pascual
tossed a complete game as the Minnesota Twins topped the Detroit Tigers by a
score of 9 to 2 at Tiger Stadium.

Allison had a big day at the plate. He smashed a solo-shot out of the park in
the 6th inning, delivered a base-hit in the 7th inning and popped a two-run
clout over the fence in the 9th inning. Minnesota totaled 17 hits on the
afternoon.

Pascual(7-1) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 2 runs. Jim
Bunning(3-2) absorbed the loss. He gave up 7 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings of
work.

'He came out with good stuff,' Sam Mele said about Pascual. 'He threw the ball
good from the first pitch on.'

1962 AL Standings and League Leaders

May 15, 1962

It's midway thru the month of May in the 1962 AL season. After today's loss to the Minnesota Twins my Detroit Tigers have dropped into a tie for 1st place in the league with the Twins. The 2nd year Washington Senators continue to defy the prognosticators by winning at a high rate and hold 3rd place in the AL. Only the Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Athletics and Boston Red Sox continue to exhibit major problems and have dropped off the radar in the pursuit of the pennant early in this season. KC has been a dreadful 1-12 so far in May.
Detroit's Rocky Colavtio leads the AL in HR (12) and RBI (33). Chicago's Al Smith leads in BA (.398). Minnesota's Camilo Pascual (6-1, 2.98 ERA, 48K) has been the top pitcher in the AL although supporters of New York's Ralph Terry (6-0, 2.44 ERA) may disagree with that assessment.

Right fielder Frank Robinson smacked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the
Cincinnati Reds beat the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 4 to 2.

Robinson provided much of the offense. He lifted one out of the park for a
two run home run in the 1st inning and cracked a two-run shot in the 8th
inning. Pittsburgh had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up
short.

Bob Purkey(8-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and allowing 2
runs. Purkey was helped out by Bill Henry who recorded his 1st save. Bob
Friend(5-2) took the loss. He pitched 4 innings allowing 4 hits and no
walks.

'I was a little good, a little bad and a little ugly.' said Purkey, 'I was
just giving us a chance to win.'
