1962 AL Standings and League Leaders

June 20, 1962

It's June 20th and the Minnesota Twins continue to hold the lead in the AL by going 7-3 over the last 10 days. Only my Detroit Tigers gained ground by going 8-2 and are now 4 games behind the Twins. The Washington Senators and Cleveland Indians are the only other teams above .500.
LA's Leon Wagner has continued his hot hitting with 7 homeruns and 9 RBI over the last 10 days. He leads the AL in both categories. The bottom 2 teams in the league, Baltimore and Boston, have at least provided the top 2 hitters in Brooks Robinson (.350 BA) and Pete Runnels (.348 BA). Minnesota's Camilo Pascual (13-1, 2.73 ERA, 103 K) and New York's Ralph Terry (10-3, 2.45 ERA, 78 K's) continue to be the top starters in the AL.

1962 NL Standings and League Leaders

June 20, 1962

The Philadelphia Phillies have been on a hot streak, winning 9 of their last 10 games. As a result, the Phillies lead the NL in Win %, but technically they are a .5 game behind the San Francisco Giants for 1st place. Don Demeter, Johnny Callison and Tony Gonzalez have led the way for Philadelphia. The Pittsburgh Pirates have been a NL best 15-6 so far in June. 4th place Cinncinati's Bob Purkey continued his mound mastery by winning 2 games in the last 10 days. He's now a league best 14-2. LA's Sandy Koufax threw 2 shutouts his last 2 starts. He's now 10-1 with a league best 2.20 ERA and 140 K's on the season. 7 of the 10 NL teams are within 10 games of the top spot in the league. The good battle for the pennant continues.

1962 AL Game: Det. @ NY

June 12, 1962
Though he is having the worst season of his career, Detroit Tiger Frank Lary is still a "Yankee Killer". Lary is 1-6 with a 7.36 ERA so far this year with his only Win coming against NY. Tonight, Lary got into a pitching duel with the Yankees Bill Stafford, throwing 8 scoreless innings of 5-hit ball before tiring and leaving with the score still 0-0 in the 9th. Detroit finally prevailed in the 11th inning when Rocky Colavito drove in Jake Wood from 3rd base with a single. Terry Fox pitched a perfect inning in the bottom of the 11th to get the Win for Detroit.

1962 AL Standings and League Leaders

June 10, 1962

10 days into the month of June still finds the Minnesota Twins sitting in 1st place in the AL. The Twins continue to play solid baseball and are 7-3 this month. Harmon Killebrew (.275, 17 HR, 51 RBI) has led the offense and Camilo Pascual (12-1, 2.45 ERA, 92K) has been the top pitcher in the league.
My 2nd place Detroit Tigers continue to keep place with Minnesota. Rocky Colavito (.310, 18 HR, 54 RBI) and Norm Cash (.299, 14 HR, 40 RBI) lead the Tiger offense which is rated 2nd in the AL. The pitching is still another story. Detroit ranks next to last in the league. The Tigers have given standout reliever Hank Aguirre 2 starts this season with good results, so they've decided to leave Aguirre in the starting rotation for the foreseeable future. Terry Fox has returned from injury and will handle the bulk of the bullpen work. The Tigers still don't expect Al Kaline back until late July.
Cleveland, Washington and New York are the other teams in the 1st division and above .500. The Indians and Senators have held steady while New York has finally gotten on a roll, winning their last 6 in a row. Ralph Terry is 9-3 with a 2.45 ERA and 69 K for the Yankees. He's in the top 3 in those categories. The Indian's Chuck Essegian is having a standout season (.347 BA, 15 HR, 41 RBI).  He's in the top 5 of those categories. Washington is still the surprise team of the year. They continue to battle game in and game out. The Senators have the top BA in the AL with a .274 mark.
Los Angeles and Chicago have had a season of some highs and many lows, but seem to be better than their record indicates. While Kansas City has played better as of late, they, along with Baltimore and Boston, have floundered along most of the season.  The Angels' Leon Wagner has caught fire and now leads the AL in HR with 24 and RBI with 55. Chicago's Al Smith leads the league in BA, hitting .370 so far.

1962 NL Standings and League Leaders

June 10, 1962

We're 10 days into the month of June. The San Francisco Giants are still in 1st place, going 7-3 in their last 10 games. Orlando Cepeda, Willie Mays, and Felipe Alou have been providing punch at the plate for SF. The Philadelphia Phillies have been hot, going 9-1 in their last 10 and moving within 2.5 games of the Giants. The Phillies have been getting excellent offensive production from Johnny Callison and Don Demeter. The 2nd place Cincinnati Reds hit a bump losing their last 4 in a row, but they're 5-5 so far in June keeping the Giants in the crosshairs. Pittsburgh has remained steady, only 3.5 GB San Francisco. The expansion Houston Colt 45's have surprised many with their good play. They've been 8-2 so far in June and 30-27 overall. The Los Angeles Dodgers have been the most disappointing team in the NL to me. The Dodgers have gone 3-7 lately, falling into the 2nd Division, 7.5 GB the league leaders. St. Louis and Milwaukee have also underperformed in this replay. The Cardinals offense has been excellent but their pitching has been bad. Bill White, Stan Musial, and Ken Boyer are among the league leaders in hitting. But only Bob Gibson and Larry Jackson are having decent seasons pitching for St. Louis. The Braves offense has been the worst in the NL and their pitching has been mediocre. Chicago and New York have performed as expected, poorly.
