10 days into the month of June still finds the Minnesota Twins sitting in 1st place in the AL. The Twins continue to play solid baseball and are 7-3 this month. Harmon Killebrew (.275, 17 HR, 51 RBI) has led the offense and Camilo Pascual (12-1, 2.45 ERA, 92K) has been the top pitcher in the league.
My 2nd place Detroit Tigers continue to keep place with Minnesota. Rocky Colavito (.310, 18 HR, 54 RBI) and Norm Cash (.299, 14 HR, 40 RBI) lead the Tiger offense which is rated 2nd in the AL. The pitching is still another story. Detroit ranks next to last in the league. The Tigers have given standout reliever Hank Aguirre 2 starts this season with good results, so they've decided to leave Aguirre in the starting rotation for the foreseeable future. Terry Fox has returned from injury and will handle the bulk of the bullpen work. The Tigers still don't expect Al Kaline back until late July.
Cleveland, Washington and New York are the other teams in the 1st division and above .500. The Indians and Senators have held steady while New York has finally gotten on a roll, winning their last 6 in a row. Ralph Terry is 9-3 with a 2.45 ERA and 69 K for the Yankees. He's in the top 3 in those categories. The Indian's Chuck Essegian is having a standout season (.347 BA, 15 HR, 41 RBI). He's in the top 5 of those categories. Washington is still the surprise team of the year. They continue to battle game in and game out. The Senators have the top BA in the AL with a .274 mark.
Los Angeles and Chicago have had a season of some highs and many lows, but seem to be better than their record indicates. While Kansas City has played better as of late, they, along with Baltimore and Boston, have floundered along most of the season. The Angels' Leon Wagner has caught fire and now leads the AL in HR with 24 and RBI with 55. Chicago's Al Smith leads the league in BA, hitting .370 so far.
