1962 AL Standings and League Leaders

April 15, 1962

We're one full week into the 1962 MLB season. It's the middle of April and many games have been canceled because of bad weather. My Detroit Tigers have had 3 games postponed and the 3 games they have played were in bad weather. Rocky Colavito has gotten off to a great start. He's batting .600 with 3 HR and 7 RBI in the Tiger's 3 games played. The Minnesota Twins have gotten off to an excellent start going 5-0. At the other end of the Standings, the Los Angeles Angels are still searching for their 1st Win. Here are the Standings and League Leaders of the games played through April 15th.

1962 AL Game: NY @ Det. Tigers Home Opener

April 13, 1962

The Detroit Tigers opened the season on the road in Washington with a 7-3 loss. Their next 2 games against the Senators were rained out before they traveled back to Detroit for the Home Opener against the defending World Series Champion New York Yankees.
Detroit has had 3 days off since their only game this season and played today on a raw, wet and cold afternoon. There was even snow falling earlier in the morning. Despite the bad weather, 29,000+ fans showed up for the Home Opener. Yankee Killer Frank Lary (pictured) started for the Tigers. Bill Stafford got the start for NY. Detroit got off to an early lead in the 1st inning thanks in part to a rare 2-base error by Mickey Mantle. In fact, Mantle had 2 errors in the game but only the first led to a run. NY went ahead in the 2nd on a Yogi Berra 2-run homer. The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the 6th. With 2 outs Rocky Colavito hit a 2-run homer. Norm Cash followed with a blast of his own. The back-to-back homeruns finished the day for Stafford. The Yankees got back a run in the 7th making it 4-3 in favor of Detroit. Terry Fox came on in relief to pitch the last 2 innings. Even though Fox got into jams both innings he was able to wiggle out of them for a Save, preserve the Win for Lary, and send the hometown fans away happy.

1962 NL Games: Chi. @ Hou. and NY @ St. Louis

April 11, 1962

Included in today's slate of games in the NL the Houston Colt .45s got their 1st franchise victory in a marathon game against the Chicago Cubs. The other new team in the NL, the New York Mets, got a Win in their 1st game of the season.
It took 16 1/2 innings of scoreless play but the Houston Colts finally plated a run in the bottom of the 17th for 1-0 victory over the Cubs. The pitchers on both clubs shut down the offenses until 2 singles and a walk resulted in a run for Houston.
The New York Mets got outstanding pitching from Roger Craig and Bob Miller in their 4-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. The Mets scored 3 runs in the 7th inning for the deciding runs and the Cardinal fans had to go home with an Opening Day loss.
