1962 AL Game Stories

April 10, 1962

  The rest of the AL teams got their season's underway today, a day after the season Opening game in Washington.

Dick Donovan smacked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Cleveland Indians
defeated the Boston Red Sox by the score of 9 to 6 at Fenway Park.
 
Donovan had a good day at the plate.  He ripped a solo home run in the 3rd
inning and launched a three-run homer in the 7th inning.  Boston had a chance
in the 9th but they came up short.  
 
The victory was credited to Donovan(1-0) who went 8 and 1/3 innings, allowing
6 runs. Frank Funk recorded the save, his 1st.  The losing pitcher was Don
Schwall(0-1).  He allowed 3 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings.  
 
'This was a tough loss,' said Pinky Higgins, 'the kind that sticks with you
for awhile.'

Al Smith had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Chicago White Sox outscored the Los
Angeles Angels 8 to 4.
 
Juan Pizarro(1-0) pitched well enough to earn the win.  He allowed 8 hits and
1 walk in 6 and 1/3 innings.  Chicago had 14 hits for the game and Los
Angeles had 10.  
 
Eli Grba(0-1) took the loss.  He was hit hard and gave up 12 hits and 4 walks
in 5 and 2/3 innings.

The New York Yankees had very little trouble at Yankee Stadium downing the
Baltimore Orioles.  The score was 10 to 5.
 
The game started off with New York taking the lead in the first scoring 4
runners on 4 hits.  Overall New York out-hit Baltimore 14 to 11.  
 
Whitey Ford(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 and 1/3 innings and
allowing 5 runs. Billy Hoeft(0-1) ended up with the loss.  He got hit pretty
hard, allowing 10 hits and 2 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings.

Jack Kralick hit one over the fence and had 2 RBI and he completed the game
without help from the bullpen at Municipal Stadium as the Minnesota Twins
beat the Kansas City Athletics 9 to 2.
 
Kralick(1-0) gave a fine effort for Minnesota.  He went 9 innings and
surrended up 8 hits and 2 walks.  Minnesota banged out 13 hits on the
afternoon.  
 
The losing pitcher was Ed Rakow(0-1).  Minnesota scored big getting 8 runs off
him in 7 and 1/3 innings.
