1962 NL Standings: The SF Giants Win the Pennant

 September 18, 1962

  The San Francisco Giants clinched 1st place in the NL when then Cincinnati Reds defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 today. The Giants had the day off while the 2nd place Pirates were hosting the 3rd place Reds. The Reds got an excellent pitching performance from Jim O'Toole who went the distance with a 4-hitter while winning his 15th game of the season. The teams flip-flopped position in the NL Standings and the Giants could relax a bit with 11 games left in their regular season.

Jim O'Toole went 9 strong innings at Forbes Field where the Cincinnati Reds
beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 2 to 1.
 
Pittsburgh was unable to claim the lead after Cincinnati went ahead in the top
of the 4th inning scoring a single run.  Pittsburgh threatened in the 9th but
their rally came up short.  
 
The win was credited to O'Toole(15-11) who went the whole way allowing 1 run.
Earl Francis(8-10) suffered the loss.  'When O'Toole is on like that it is a
tough game to play, no doubt about it,' Danny Murtaugh said. 'He always
pitches well against us.'
