The ball was flying out of Tiger Stadium today in Game 3 of the World Series between the San Francisco Giants and the Detroit Tigers. It was a wild one with 7 homeruns on 26 hits, 10 walks, 4 errors, and 21 runs scored in the game. When the dust finally settled the Giants had come away with a 12-9 victory.
Detroit loaded the bases in the bottom of the 1st but SF starter Billy O'Dell was able to get out of the jam without allowing a run. In the 2nd, catcher Bob Bailey hit a 2-run homer off Tiger starter Don Mossi and SF led 2-0. In the 3rd inning Orlando Cepeda hit his 2nd homerun in this World Series, a 2-run blast giving the Giants a 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the 3rd Al Kaline hit his 2nd homer of the WS, a solo shot that put Detroit on the scoreboard.
In the bottom of the 4th inning Chico Fernandez hit a homerun and Dick McAuliffe added a 2-run homer as Detroit scored 4 runs on 4 hits and an error. The Tigers now led for the first time in the game 5-4. SF's Willie Mays homered in the top of the 5th and we were tied again 5-5. Detroit came right back in the bottom of the 5th scoring 2 runs for a 7-5 lead.
After a scoreless 6th inning both teams plated 2 runs in the 7th and SF added another run in the 8th, so Detroit entered the 9th inning holding a 9-8 lead. Tiger relief ace Terry Fox came on to pitch the 9th but he was very ineffective and by the time the Giants were done hitting they had scored 4 runs. The Giant's Stu Miller was on the hill to close out the game but got into immediate trouble when the first 2 Tiger batters singled. With the tying run at the plate, Miller was able to retire the next 3 hitters preserving the 12-9 San Francisco victory.
The Giants now lead The Series 2-1 and Game 4 tomorrow will see a repeat matchup of Game 1 starters Juan Marichal (0-1) for SF and Hank Aguirre (1-0) going for Detroit.

San Francisco came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 9th inning when they scored 4 runs on 4 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Jim Davenport who disappointed the partisan crowd when he doubled which was good for two runs. This was the kind of game that many fans love as the lead changed hands 5 times. The win was credited to Stu Miller(1-0) who went 1 and 2/3 innings allowing no runs. Terry Fox(0-1) took the loss in relief. He gave up 4 runs and 4 hits in 1/3 of an inning. Bob Scheffing was understandably not very talkative after his team's tough loss. He quickly showered and changed and when asked about the game had a terse, yet polite response, 'Hey fellows, that game was a heart-breaker to lose. Our guys gave it their all and played well - fate just wasn't smilin' on us this afternoon'
