August 1, 1962
My Detroit Tigers continue their impressive play and hold 1st place in the AL as the calendar turns to August. I've been pleasantly surprised at how well they've over-performed. Detroit has been winning with their offense. Colavito and Cash have been pounding the ball, but it's been players like CF Billy Bruton (15 HR, .338 BA good for 3rd in the AL), SS Chico Fernandez (18 HR, 50 RBI), and the Catchers Dick Brown (15 HR, 45 RBI) and Mike Roarke (.304 BA) that have been fun to watch. Al Kaline is now back after missing 2 months of the season and he's been hitting well since his return. Detroit is now 14 games over their Actual record at this point in the season. But the most surprising team is still the Washington Senators. They're in 3rd place only 5.5 games behind Detroit. Washington is 19 games better than their Actual and it doesn't look like they're going to falter. The 2nd place Minnesota Twins still look like the team Detroit is going to have to hold off to Win the Pennant. Then there is New York, the team that actually won the pennant in 1962. The Yankees had the best record in July (22-9) and have moved into 4th place. Their slow start has put them behind the eight ball but there is still a lot of baseball to be played. All of the teams have played at least 100 games. That means there are 60 or so games left. Enough to see big changes in the standings.
