1962 AL Game: Det. @ NY

May 26, 1962  See the source image

The Detroit Tigers, behind the superb pitching of Hank Aguirre, beat the New York Yankees 3-0 today, but it wasn't without a price. It was the 5th time in 5 meetings the Tigers have defeated the Yankees this year.  Aguirre, getting his first start of the season, went the distance allowing only 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 8. Norm Cash hit a 2-run homer in the 4th and Chico Fernandez hit a solo shot in the 5th to account for all Detroit's scoring. Now for the price the Tigers paid: In the 9th inning, Al Kaline made a diving catch on a flyball hit by Hector Lopez. It looked like Kaline injured himself on the play but he stayed in the game until Aguirre recorded the final out. We've just learned that Kaline broke his collarbone on the play and is expected to be out 6-8 weeks.

Hank Aguirre had an impressive outing as the Detroit Tigers bested the New
York Yankees 3 to 0 at Yankee Stadium.

Aguirre(2-1) escaped virtually unscathed against the New York hitters. He
surrendered only 4 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 2.08
to 1.23. Detroit had only 6 hits for the game, but 2 of them were homeruns.

Rollie Sheldon(0-4) was hit with the loss. He surrendered only 3 runs and 5
hits in 8 innings. 'Aguirre took our guys to school' Ralph Houk said. 'Too
bad he doesn't pitch for us - it would make my job a whole lot easier!'
