We are now 1 full month into the 1962 NL season since the start of play on April 9th. The San Francisco Giants, who are a bit below their actual '62 record, are still in 1st place in the NL. Led by Willie Mays (.296, 8 HR, 19 RBI) and Juan Marichal (5-2, 2.30 ERA, 43 K) the Giants have the best RUNS/AGNST DIFF in the NL. Most of the teams are performing close to their actual level of play except for the St. Louis Cardinals who have played below expectations. While their offense has been the best in the NL the pitching has yet to come around. The Cardinals pitching is ranked 9th out of the 10 teams. 1st baseman Bill White (.388, 9 HR, 24 RBI) leads the NL in BA and HR and is 4th in RBI. Stan Musial (.366) and Ken Boyer (.364, 24 RBI) are also off to great starts. If the pitching does come around the Cardinals would be serious contenders. After a slow start, the Los Angeles Dodgers have picked up steam and are getting a great balance of pitching and hitting. SS Maury Wills continues to swipe bases (23) at a record pace. The defending NL Champion Cincinnati Red's Bob Purkey (7-0, 1,88 ERA) has been the top pitcher in the league.
