October 5, 1962
After losing Game 1 and heading to Detroit for 3 games after this one, the San Francisco Giants really needed a Win in Game 2 of the 1962 World Series. Just like in Game 1, the Giants scored first in the bottom of the 1st on a home run. This time it was Willie Mays who blasted a mammoth shot to leftfield off Tiger starter Jim Bunning for a 1-0 SF lead. Detroit went ahead 2-1 in the 4th inning when Norm Cash hit a 2-run shot off SF starter Jack Sanford.
In the bottom of the 4th, Bunning seemed to lose control of his pitches and the Giants scored big plating 4 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks. Jose Pagan got the key hit for SF when he singled through the drawn-in infield for 2 runs. Bunning was pinch hit for in top of the 5th and Felipe Alou greeted reliever Phil Regan with a homerun for a 6-2 SF lead. In the top of the 6th Al Kaline homered for Detroit and the score stood at 6-3. That was as close as Detroit would get the rest of the game.
The bottom fell out for the Tigers in the bottom of the 7th. San Francisco tallied 6 runs in the inning on 6 singles, a walk, a 2-base throwing error, a wild pitch and a passed ball. The route was on for SF and the final score was 12-3. Detroit's bullpen failed miserably in the game while the Giants was perfect over the last 2 1/3 innings.
The Series is now tied 1-1 as the teams head to Detroit for the next 3 games. Detroit's Don Mossi will get the start in Game 3 and Billy O'Dell gets the nod for San Francisco.

WEB GEMS- Bot 3rd: Rocky Colavito robbed Willie Mays of a Homerun!
Willie Mays homered and had 2 RBI as the San Francisco Giants bested the
Detroit Tigers 12 to 3 at Candlestick Park.
Detroit was unable to claim the lead after San Francisco went ahead in the
bottom of the 4th inning scoring 4 runners on 3 hits. The key offensive
moment was provided by Jose Pagan who made the San Francisco fans a happy lot
when he stroked a base-hit bringing home two baserunners. San Francisco
finished with 14 hits while Detroit ended up with 6.
The victory went to Jack Sanford(1-0) who went 6 and 2/3 innings, allowing 3
runs. Jim Bunning(0-1) was the loser. He was not very effective,
surrendering 5 runs in 4 innings.
