As is the norm for MLB on the 4th of July many doubleheaders were played today. In the NL, the league leading SF Giants had to go 14 innings in their 1st game before coming away with a 6-5 victory. Orlando Cepeda clubbed a solo shot in the bottom of the 14th for the win. The Giants also took game 2 by the score of 4-3 and pulled a little further ahead of the 2nd place Philadelphia Phillies who split their doubleheader against the LA Dodgers. Of note in the 1st game for Philadelphia, young starter Chris Short (9-0) out-pitched the Dodgers Sandy Koufax to get his 9th Win of the season. The 3rd place Pittsburgh Pirates dropped both their games against the Houston Colt 45's to fall further behind the Giants.
