1962 MLB All Star Game 1

July 10, 1962

The 1962 All Star Game was played today at Washington's D. C. Stadium. The AL really laid it on  the NL winning the contest 7-0. New York Yankee rookie Tom Tresh (pictured) homered in the 1st inning and hit a 3-run blast in the 2nd. Both homeruns were off NL starter Sandy Koufax and led to his early exit in the ballgame. The Yankees Elston Howard and Los Angeles Angel Leon Wagner also homered for the AL. The NL could get nothing going and were held to a total of 3 hits by the AL pitchers.

1962 AL Standings and League Leaders at the All Star Break

July 9, 1962

The 1962 MLB season pauses now for the All Star Game to be played tomorrow at Washington's D.C. Stadium. It will be the first of two All Star Games this year. The 2nd game will be played July 30th at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
At the break my Detroit Tigers have just overtaken the Minnesota Twins for 1st place in the AL. The Twins have been on an extended losing streak going 1-9 in their last 10 games. Meanwhile, the Tigers were 7-3 and that is what allowed Detroit to move into 1st by 1/2 game. Most every team in the AL has benefited from Minnesota's struggles. The 3rd place Washington Senators, who have been the biggest surprise in the AL this season, moved within 5.5 games of the top spot by going 8-2.  Bob Johnson (.339 BA, 3rd in the AL) and Chuck Hinton (.336, 4th in the AL) have led the way for Washington. My Tigers have been led by Rocky Colavito (24 HR, 78 RBI), and Norm Cash (26 HR, 60 RBI). The Twins have been led by Camilo Pascual (15-2, 2.93 ERA, 126 K's) and Harmon Killebrew (25 HR, 76 RBI).
The 4th place Cleveland Indians have been playing under the radar, quietly staying in the race with their good play. Rounding out the 1st division teams, the New York Yankees have been underperforming this season but look like they're finally turning things around. The Yankee's pitching has been in the top 3 all season and their hitting is finally starting to produce. Pitcher Ralph Terry has had a fine season (12-3, 2.55 ERA, 95 K's) and Elston Howard (.294, 16 HR, 47 RBI) has provided consistent offense.
The Los Angeles Angels have been powered by Leon Wagner (34 HR and 79 RBI, both tops in the AL) and Lee Thomas (.299, 19, 56). Boston's Pete Runnels is 2nd in the league with a .351 BA while Baltimore's Brooks Robinson is 1st at .357. So even the fans of 2nd division teams have something to cheer about.
I've got to very happy with my Detroit Tigers standing in the league. They're overperforming by 9 games and have the 2nd best run production in the AL. But their pitching continues to be at or near the bottom in the league. I don't know if they can continue to pound out Wins. Moving Hank Aguirre into the Starting rotation looks to be a good move and he should be able to help overcome the poor performance by Frank Lary this year. But that will leave Terry Fox and Ron Nischwitz as the only reliable pitchers in the bullpen. I'm hoping Sam Jones comes around. Looking forward to the 2nd half of this 1962 season!

1962 NL Standings and League Leaders at the All Star Break

July 9, 1962

In 1962 MLB played 2 All star Games. The 1st will be tomorrow July 10th at Washington's DC Stadium. Here are the Standings for the NL and the League Leaders at the break. The San Francisco Giants are in 1st place in the NL with 5 other teams in hot pursuit right behind them. Willie Mays (1st in HR with 23), Orlando Cepeda (1st in RBI with 72) and Juan Marichal (1st in Wins with 14) among others have led the Giants.
For the 2nd place Pittsburgh Pirates Bob Skinner (.354, 8 HR, 44 RBI), Roberto Clemente (.329, 7, 46), Bill Mazeroski (.307, 8, 49), Bob Friend (13-3, 2.31 ERA) and Roy Face (14 Saves) are having outstanding seasons.  The 3rd place Philadelphia Phillies are led by Johnny Callison (.375 BA, 1st in NL and 20 HR, 3rd in NL), Tony Gonzalez (.340, 12, 49),  Don Demeter (.328, 18, 57) and Chris Short (9-0, 2.02 ERA).
  Other players having outstanding seasons are Cincinnati's Bob Purkey (14-5, 2.58), Gary Coleman (.323, 16, 53) and Frank Robinson (.316, 19, 60). The LA Dodgers have Sandy Koufax (13-3, 2.50, 199 K's), Tommy Davis (.326, 16, 62), Willie Davis (.293, 16, 48) and Maury Wills (64 steals).
St. Louis Cardinal Bill White has cooled off a bit but only a bit. He's still 2nd in BA (.364) and has 17 HR with 58 RBI. His teammate Ken Boyer is hitting .333 with 14 HR and 69 RBI.
The Houston Colt 45's have been the biggest surprise in the NL. It's been a collective team effort to get the Colt 45s to their winning record. Leftfielder  Roman Mejias (.306, 16, 54) and pitcher Turk Farrell 7 Wins, 2.39 ERA) have the best stats on the team.

1962 AL Game: Bal. @ Det. Tigers Move into tie for 1st

July 7, 1962

The Detroit Tigers got a very well pitched game from veteran Sam Jones and the fans got a teeth clenching 4-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. The win, combined with Minnesota's loss to New York today, moved the Tigers into a 1st place tie with the Twins. Jones has struggled all season in the bullpen and now as a Starter, but he threw his best game of the season today. He gave up a homerun to Boog Powell in the 1st inning but then shut down the Orioles until the 9th inning striking out 11 in the game. Obviously tired entering the 9th, manager Bob Sheffing stuck with Jones mainly because he had struck out 6 in a row. When Jones walked the lead off man in the 9th he was replaced with Ron Nischwitz. But that move immediately backfired when the rookie Powell hit a 2-run bomb, his 2nd homer of the game. Jim Gentile followed that with a double and that was all for Nischwitz. Terry Fox came on and gave up an infield hit to Jackie Brandt. After Brandt stole 2nd, the Orioles had runners on 3rd and 2nd with no outs. Detroit pulled the infield in and got a groundball to 1st from Brooks Robinson that the runners had to hold on. Fox then struck out Gus Triandos and got Jerry Adair on a lineout to ss Fernandez, who made a great catch, to end the game. Everyone in the ballpark let out a collective sigh of relief when the Tigers walked off  the field with the big victory and a piece of 1st place.

Catcher Mike Roarke had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Sam Jones reeled off a total
of 11 strikeouts at Tiger Stadium where the Detroit Tigers beat the Baltimore
Orioles by the score of 4 to 3.

Jones(1-3) was solid in the win. He didn't allow much, just 4 hits and 1 walk
in 8 innings seeing his ERA drop from 5.12 to 4.63. Baltimore made it
exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

Jones was helped out by Terry Fox who recorded his 12th save. Chuck
Estrada(7-6) took the loss. The Detroit fans were thrilled by the
performance put forth by Jones, but it was clearly his strikeouts that they
enjoyed most. 'When he reached 10 strikeouts the fans showed him their
appreciation with a loud cheer.' Bob Scheffing said following the game.

1962 AL Games and Standings

July 6, 1962

My Detroit Tigers have pulled within 1 game of the league leading Minnesota Twins after a dramatic come from behind 7-6 victory over the Baltimore Orioles tonight. The Tigers led early earlier in the game but the Orioles battled back to take a 6-4 lead in the 7th inning. Detroit tied it up in the bottom of the 8th before Norm Cash homered in the bottom of the 9th to win the game in dramatic fashion.
The New York Yankees defeated the Twins 2-1 in a great pitching duel between Ralph Terry and Camilo Pascual. Minnesota is in the midst of their worst stretch this season going 2-8 in their last 10 games. Meanwhile, the red hot Washington Senators beat the Kansas City Athletics 2-1 in another good pitching battle. It was their 9th win in the last 10 games and moved them within 6 games of the league leaders.

1962 AL Game Stories

July 4, 1962

The traditional 4th of July doubleheader was in full force in the AL today. All 10 teams played 2 today. The Bal. @ Chi. games both went extra innings, leading to a long day at the ballpark. But the hometown fans weren't disappointed when the White Sox won both games. Game 1 went 13 innings before the Sox came away with a 3-2 win. Game 2 went 14 innings before Luis Aparicio won it with solo shot for another 3-2 victory. Game 1 of the KC @ NY doubleheader went 15 innings before the Yankees pulled out a 9-8 win. The Athletics took Game 2 4-1 in a 9 inning contest. The Washington Senators were the day's biggest winners when they took both games of their doubleheader against the LA Angels. The Senators gained 2 games on the league leading Minnesota Twins who dropped both of their games against the Boston Red Sox. My Detroit Tigers had an opportunity to gain 2 games on the Twin themselves. They defeated the Cleveland Indians in Game 1 and had a 7-3 lead late in Game 2 before collapsing and losing in 11 innings 8-7.

The losing pitcher was Bob Turley(4-4). He pitched 5 and 2/3 innings giving
