1962 NL Game Stories

April 10, 1962

  The day after Opening Day in Cincinnati the rest of the NL teams got their season's underway. Only the game in St. Louis with the new New York Mets didn't get played due to rain. The other new addition to the NL, the Houston Colt .45s, opened at home with a loss to the Chicago Cubs.

Don Cardwell completed the game without help from the bullpen at Colt Stadium
as the Chicago Cubs beat the Houston Coltt 45s 7 to 3.
 
Chicago started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of the
first scoring 2 runners on 3 hits.  Chicago totaled 11 hits on the afternoon.
 
The win went to Cardwell(1-0) who allowed 3 runs in the game. The loss was
charged to Bobby Shantz(0-1).  He was unable to control the Chicago offense
and allowed 8 hits and 4 walks in 5 innings.

Bob Purkey tossed a complete game and Tommy Harper had 2 base hits as the
Cincinnati Reds outscored the Los Angeles Dodgers 4 to 1.
 
Purkey(1-0) had a solid outing for Cincinnati.  He went 9 innings allowing 6
hits and 2 walks.  Neither team was able to score until the 7th inning.
 
Johnny Podres(0-1) was the losing pitcher.  He surrendered 6 hits and 1 walk
in 6 and 2/3 innings.

Juan Marichal had an impressive outing at Candlestick Park where the San
Francisco Giants beat the Milwaukee Braves by the score of 2 to
1.
 
Marichal(1-0) pitched a solid game.  He was stingy on the mound, allowing just
4 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings.  San Francisco finished with 8 hits while
Milwaukee ended up with 4.  
 
Stu Miller earned his 1st save.  Warren Spahn(0-1) was charged with the loss.
He surrendered 2 runs and 7 hits in 7 and 1/3 innings.

Center fielder Tony Gonzalez had 4 hits and 4 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies
beat the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 6 to 0.
 
Gonzalez led the offense for Philadelphia.  He singled in the 1st inning,
lofted a three-run bomb in the 3rd inning, ripped a one-base hit in the 7th
inning and lined a base-hit scoring a run in the 9th inning.  Philadelphia
out-hit Pittsburgh for the game, 11 hits to 6.  
 
The win went to Jim Owens(1-0) who allowed no runs in 5 innings. Chris Short
recorded his 1st save.  Bob Friend(0-1) took the loss.  He gave up 11 hits
and 3 walks in 9 innings.
