April 9, 1962

The Washington Senators opened the 1962 AL season today in their new home  D.C. Stadium. President John F. Kennedy threw out the 1st pitch and after much fanfare the game got underway. Bennie Daniels got the start for Washington and before he departed the game in the 8th inning the Senators had built a 7-3 lead. Washington scored first in the 5th inning when Chuck Cottier smacked a 2-run homer off Tiger starter Don Mossi. They added 2 runs in the 6th and 2 more in the 7th before Detroit finally got on the scoreboard with 3 runs in the 8th. That 7-3 score would hold up to the end and start a celebration by the the hometown fans.
