1962 AL Game: Min. @ Det.

 August 3, 1962

The 2nd place Minnesota Twins came into Detroit today for a 4 game series against the AL leaders. The Twins are the only team to have a winning record (5-3) so far in this 1962 season against the Tigers.  Tonight's game would have Jack Kralick (12-9) of the Twins pitching against Jim Bunning (11-6) of the Tigers. Detroit let this game get away after mounting an early 5-0 lead.
Detroit jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the 1st inning with 3 of those runs coming on Norm Cash's 33rd homerun of the season. The Tigers added a run in the 2nd and carried that 5-0 lead into the 5th. Minnesota had many chances to score off of Bunning in the first 4 innings but he kept getting out of big jams. The Twins finally plated 2 runs in the 5th and 2 more in the 6th to make it a 5-4 ballgame. In the 7th inning Minnesota loaded the bases with 1 out and Bunning was finally pulled. He had given up 13 hits, 2 walks, and struck out 9 in his 6 1/3 innings of work. Ron Nischwitz came on in relief and got out of that jam with a lineout doubleplay shot off the bat of Bernie Allen.
The Tigers added 2 "insurance" runs in the bottom of the 8th to take a 7-4 lead into the 9th. Detroit's bullpen imploded at that point and before the top of the 9th was over Minnesota had scored 4 times against 3 different relievers to take a 8-7 lead. Ray Moore came on to close out the game and he pitched a 1,2,3 inning, giving the Twins the Win. Minnesota pounded out 19 hits in the game and are now 6-3 against Detroit, moving within 3.5 games of the 1st place team with 3 more to play in this series.

TEAM RISP- Twins: 6 for 17 Tigers: 3 for 9

Rich Rollins hit 2 doubles and had 3 RBI and Ray Moore closed the door on
Detroit as the Minnesota Twins staged a dramatic comeback over the Detroit
Tigers by a score of 8 to 7 at Tiger Stadium.

Minnesota scored the winning runs in the top of the 9th inning when they came
up with 4 runs on 4 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Rollins
who silenced Tiger Stadium as he lashed a single scoring two baserunners.
Moore pitched a perfect ninth and was credited with his 13th save.

Lee Stange(3-4) allowed 2 runs in 1 inning, and picked up the victory. Ron
Kline(2-2) was given the loss in relief. Sam Mele was very happy after the
game, 'It's great to come back and win it in your last at bats! Our guys just
wouldn't give up. And did you see the fans - one minute they're laughing and
screaming down all sorts of unprintable stuff at our guys - the next minute -
SILENCE! Yes sir, a very enjoyable win tonight!'
