1962 AL Game: Chi. @ Det. No-Hitter!

 September 1, 1962

Chicago White Sox pitcher Ray Herbert threw the first no-hitter of the 1962 season today, blanking the Detroit Tigers 2-0. Herbert and the Tiger's Hank Aguirre hooked up in a tense pitching duel with both pitchers not allowing a hit until the 5th inning. Aguirre finally allowed that hit and then allowed 2 runs in the 6th for all the scoring in the game. The Tiger's Dick Brown almost broke up the no-hit bid when he led off the 9th with a line shot that was grabbed by Louis Aparicio. Herbert walked 3 and struck out 4 while pitching the no-hitter.

Ray Herbert(11-13) thrilled the fans at Tiger Stadium as he crafted a no-hit
masterpiece against the Detroit Tigers. The Chicago White Sox won by a final
score of 2 to 0.

Herbert had an afternoon to remember. He walked 3 Detroit batters. The
tension started to build around the 6th inning. By the 9th inning the crowd
was electrified. Chicago had just 6 hits for the afternoon.

The losing pitcher was Hank Aguirre(12-5). He surrendered 6 hits and 3 walks
in 9 innings. When asked how his stuff was out there, Herbert looked a bit
incredulous (as did this reporter) and replied 'A bit better than average,
I'd have to say'

1962 AL Standings and League Leaders

 September 1, 1962

We're heading into the final month of the regular season in the AL. My Detroit Tigers are not faltering in their quest for the Pennant. Detroit was 20-13 in August. Only the New York Yankees kept pace with the Tigers going 21-14, but they're 9.5 games behind. The 2nd place Minnesota Twins are 7.5 games back now and the 3rd place Washington Senators are 9 back.
There's a good battle going on for top BA in the league and a good race for top Home Run hitter too. Boston's Pete Runnels and Baltimore's Brooks Robinson are both still at the top, as they have been most of the year with a .337 BA. Minnesota's Rich Rollins has joined the duo, hitting a solid .332. Twin's Harmon Killabrew leads in HR with 43, but LA's Leon Wagner (42) and Detroit's Norm Cash (40) are right behind him. Killabrew also leads in RBI with 130, and he is being chased by the Tiger's Rocky Colavito (122). There are still no 20 Game Winners in the AL. New York's Ralph Terry is tops in that category with 19.

1962 NL Standings and League Leaders

 September 1, 1962

We're heading into the final month of the 1962 NL season. The San Francisco Giants continue to be red hot and have put considerable distance between themselves and the rest of the league. The Giants have won 6 in a row, 9 of their last 10, and gone a phenomenal 24-4 in August. They now lead the 2nd place Pittsburgh Pirates by 13.5 games.
Willie Mays (.302 BA, 41HR, 105 RBI) and Juan Marichal (21-7, 3.24 ERA) are among many players having an outstanding season for the Giants. SF has scored more runs and allowed less than any other team in the NL. That's led to their huge difference in Runs Scored/Runs Allowed Differential. Around the league, Pittsburgh's been led by Bob Skinner (.348, 20, 80), and Bob Friend (16-8, 2.87 ERA). Cincinnati's Frank Robinson (.352 BA, 33 HR, 105 RBI) and Bob Purkey (24-7, 2.86 ERA) are at or near the top of the NL in several key statistical categories. Philadelphia teammates Johnny Callison and Tony Gonzalez are tied for top BA in the league (.345).  But the Phillies have been in a free fall lately, losing 7 in a row. The LA Dodgers lost the services of Sandy Koufax in the middle of July and don't expect him back until the end of September. Don Drysdale (17-9, 2.86, 205 K's) has pitched brilliantly since the loss of Koufax but it hasn't improved the Dodgers' standing in the league. After going 16-10 in July, LA went 16-13 in August.

1962 AL Game: Chi. @ Det.

 August 30, 1962

Al Kaline smacked 2 homeruns and Norm Cash reached a couple season milestones as the Detroit Tigers came from behind to defeat the Chicago White Sox 11-6. Kaline's 3-run homer in the 7th inning gave Detroit its first lead in the game and his 2nd homer, a 2-run shot in the 8th, cemented the 11-6 victory. Norm Cash hit a 2-run homer in the 8th to retake the lead for the Tigers 8-6 before Kaline capped the 5 run outburst with his homerun. For Cash it was his 40th Homerun and the 2 RBI gave him 100 for the season.

Frank Thomas blasted 2 homeruns at Polo Grounds as the New York Mets pulled
off a dramatic comeback beating the Pittsburgh Pirates by the count of 16 to
12.

New York erupted with the game winning runs in the 9th inning when they
tallied 6 runs on 3 hits. The biggest moment was provided by Thomas who made
the crowd come alive when he emptied the bases with a Grand Slam homerun.
New York provided plenty of action in the 2nd inning when they had 4 runs on
4 hits and the 9th inning when they had 6 runs on 3 hits. A wild and woolly
affair, this game saw the lead change 6 times.

The victory went to Willard Hunter(1-6) who went 1 inning, allowing 4 runs.
Earl Francis(7-8) took the loss in relief. He pitched 2/3 of an inning
giving up 3 hits and 1 walk.

The Tigers continue to be powered by Rocky Colavito (.285 BA , 34 HR, 117 RBI), Norm Cash (.288, 38, 96), Billy Bruton (.334 BA, 85 RS) and the recently returning from injury Al Kaline (.318, 14, 48). Don Mossi is surprisingly the top starter on the club with 14 Wins, but that # has been greatly influenced by his run support. Jim Bunning is a pedestrian 11-9, Paul Foytack is 6-5, Phil Regan is 6-4 and Frank Lary's season has been shut down with a sore arm after going 3-7. The biggest bright spot amongst the starters has been the performance of Hank Aguirre since being added to the rotation. Aguirre is 9-4 with a 2.84 ERA in 13 starts. Terry Fox has been stellar in the bullpen and leads the AL is Saves with 21 while sporting a 1.68 ERA.
Minnesota's Harmon Killebrew has caught LA's Leon Wagner in the HR title race. Both have 44. Killabrew leads the league in RBI with 124 and teammate Rich Rollins has the top BA (.339). New York's Ralph Terry has passed the Twin's Camilo Pascual in Wins with 18.

1962 NL Standings and League Leaders

 August 20, 1962

The San Francisco Giants have increased their lead over the 2nd place team in the NL to 10 games. The 2nd place team is now Philadelphia. The Phillies, along with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, and Los Angeles Dodgers are still bunched together in the top 5 teams in the league. But none of those teams have been able to gain any ground on the Giants.
San Francisco's Willie Mays is 1st in the NL in Homeruns with 37 and tied for 3rd in RBI with 94. Cincinnati's Frank Robinson (.361) has replaced Philadelphia's Johnny Callison (.360) as the top hitter in the league. Robinson is 3rd in homers (29) and 2nd in RBI (96) so he has an outside shot at the Triple Crown. Ken Boyer of the Cardinals leads the NL in RBI with 101.
The Reds Bob Purkey still leads the league in Wins with 22, but he has lost his last 2 decisions. LA's Maury Wills went over the 100 mark (102) during the last 10 days and is still on course to break the single season record for Stolen Bases.

1962 LA @ Pit.

 August 16, 1962

A couple of seasonal records were set tonight as the LA Dodgers defeated

the Pittsburgh Pirates 16-10 in a slugfest at Forbes Field.
The 26 runs scored tied for most in a single game by 2 teams this 1962 season. LA's Frank Howard drove in 8 of those runs, the most RBI in a game by 1 player this year. Howard hit a Grand Slam in the 1st inning, tripled in 2 runs in the 8th and added his last 2 RBI on a double in the 9th.

Frank Howard blasted a grand slam as the Los Angeles Dodgers outscored the
Pittsburgh Pirates 16 to 10.

Howard enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He cleared the bases with a Grand
Slam homerun in the 1st inning, tripled bringing in two baserunners in the
8th inning and doubled scoring two baserunners in the 9th inning. Los
Angeles provided plenty of action in the 1st inning which saw them score 5
runs on 4 hits. The Los Angeles offense man-handled the Pittsburgh pitching
staff as they scored in 7 of the 9 innings.

The win was credited to Stan Williams(6-12) who went 5 innings allowing 8
runs. Williams was helped out by Ron Perranoski who recorded his 8th save.
Joe Gibbon(4-2) was given the loss. He gave up 3 hits and 2 walks without
retiring a batter.
