July 30, 1962
This 1962 season's 2nd All Star Game was played today at Chicago's Wrigley Field. It will be the last time 2 All Star games are played in a single season in MLB. The American League won the 1st game 7-0 earlier in July and they also won today's ballgame 8-7. After being shutout in the Game 1, the NL put up a good battle in this one. Baltimore's Brooks Robinson proved to be the hero for the AL hitting 2 homeruns and getting 5 RBI.
AL rookie shortstop Tom Tresh of the New York Yankees started the game off right for the visitors by smashing a homerun off LA's Sandy Koufax. Tresh really has Sandy's number. He clubbed 2 bombs off him in the 1st All Star Game. But this time Koufax settled down and didn't allow another run in his 3 innings of work. The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the 4th when the NL put 4 runs on the board off Cleveland's Dick Donovan and Baltimore's Hoyt Wilhelm. SF's Willie Mays homered in the outburst. In the top of the 5th the AL came back when Kansas City's Jerry Lumpe led off the inning with a solo blast and Baltimore's Brooks Robinson added hit a 2-run homer, both off Cincinnati's Bob Purkey. The game remained 4-4 until the bottom of the 6th when the NL tallied 3 runs off NY's Ralph Terry for a 7-4 lead. But the AL came right back again in the next inning when Brooks Robinson hit his 2nd homer of the game. This time it was a 3-run shot off SF's Juan Marichal. Washington's Tom Cheney and Detroit's Terry Fox pitched scoreless ball the last 3 innings for the AL and they walked off the field with an 8-7 victory.

Third baseman Brooks Robinson slammed 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI at Wrigley
Field as the American 1962 club beat the National 1962 ballclub 8 to
7.
Robinson had a big day with his bat. He laced a one-base hit in the 3rd
inning, smashed a two-run homer in the 5th inning and lofted a three-run bomb
in the 7th inning. Both teams ended up with 13 hits on the afternoon.
The winning pitcher was Ralph Terry(1-0) who allowed 3 runs in 2 innings.
Terry Fox was credited with his 1st save. Juan Marichal(0-1) was hit with
the loss in relief.
'I had a big day, but there's a lot of credit to go around' Robinson said.
'We played well together as a team.'
