1962 NL Opening Day Game: Phil. @ Cin.

April 9, 1962

  The Cincinnati Reds opened the 1962 NL season at Crosley Field today and defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1. The 1961 NL Champion Reds got a well pitched game from Joey Jay along with homeruns from Vada Pinson and Jerry Lynch. Jay went 8 innings allowing 5 hits, walking 1 and striking out 3 for the Win. Jim Brosnan pitched the 9th for Cincinnati getting a Save.

At Crosley Field, the Cincinnati faithful were treated to an intriguing
pitcher's duel.  Joey Jay(1-0) finally bested his Philadelphia counterpart,
Art Mahaffey(0-1), by the score of 3 to 1.
 
Cincinnati jumped out to the early lead in the first inning plating one
baserunner.  Cincinnati had 10 hits for the afternoon while Philadelphia had
5.  
 
Jay got help from Jim Brosnan who earned his 1st save.  The loss was charged
to Mahaffey.  He surrendered 2 runs and 7 hits in 6 innings.
