August 1, 1962
It was a wild slugfest today in the 2nd game of a doubleheader between the Kansas City Athletics and the Detroit Tigers. The 1st game was a scoreless tie for 13 innings before Rocky Colavito hit a walk off 2-run homer in the 14th inning for a 2-0 Detroit win. Colavito would be the hero again in game 2 with a walk off 3-run homer in the bottom of the 9th for a 12-10 Tiger victory. The game certainly didn't get off to a good start for Detroit.
Rookie pitcher Howie Koplitz got his 1st start of the season and couldn't retire a single Athletic batter. Koplitz was chased from the mound after allowing 6 runs on 4 hits, 1 walk and 1 HBP. Wayne Causey had the big hit for KC, a grandslam homerun. So the Tigers were in a deep hole before even coming up in the bottom of the 1st. But when they did come up the Tigers put 3 runs on the board thanks to a Norm Cash 3-run homer, and then added 5 more runs in the bottom of the 2nd which included an Al Kaline 3-run bomb. Detroit now led 8-6 but that advantage wouldn't last long. KC scored 2 runs in the 4th and 1 run in the 6th to take a 9-8 lead. Detroit tied the game with a run in the bottom of the 8th before KC went ahead again 10-9 with a run in the top of the 9th. Then came the bottom of the 9th. Billy Bruton led off with a double and after Al Kaline worked a walk, Colavito came to the plate with the hometown crowd on their feet cheering wildly. Rocky did not disappoint the fans when he hit monster blast into the upperdeck in leftfield for a 12-10 Tiger victory.

Right fielder Al Kaline connected with a 'big fly' and had 3 RBI at Tiger
Stadium as the powerful Detroit Tigers came back dramatically to top the
Kansas City Athletics by the score of 12 to 10.
Detroit came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 9th inning scoring
3 runs using 2 hits. Bill Bruton led off and started the rally when he
doubled. Kaline next to the plate and he drew a walk. Rocky Colavito then
lost the ball over the fence for three runs making Detroit the victors to the
delight of the home town faithful. This was the kind of game that many fans
love as the lead changed hands 5 times.
Terry Fox(6-2) allowed 1 run in 1 inning, and picked up the victory. Dave
Wickersham(3-6) suffered the loss in relief. He surrendered 2 hits and 1
walk in 1 inning.
