 July 27, 1962

The St. Louis Cardinals pounded the New York Mets today 21-3. The Cardinals tied, or came up just short, of many of this 1962 season's high records set this year in the NL. The 21 runs scored tied for Most in the Season by One Team. Curt Flood's 6 RBI was 1 short of Most RBI in One Game. Ken Boyer's 5 hits tied for Most Hits in 1 Game. Boyer also had 5 RBI in the game. The team total of 22 hits was just 1 short of Most Hits in a Game by One Team. All in all, the Cardinals put on quite the hitting display in the game today.

1962 AL Game: Det. @ Min.

 July 23, 1962

Al Kaline returned to the lineup for Detroit after a long absence, but he alone wasn't enough to help the Tigers to victory as the Minnesota Twins won the game 6-3. Kaline has missed almost 2 months of the season after breaking his collarbone at the end of May. He went 1 for 4 tonight with a 2-run homer, but Minnesota's Harmon Killebrew hit 2 homers and had 3 RBI to lead the Twins to victory. Detroit is playing a 3 game series against the 2nd place Twins and with the Win in the opening contest, Minnesota now trails the Tigers by only 1.5 games. Minnesota is 4-2 vs. Detroit this season.

1962 AL Standings and League Leaders

July 20, 1962

My Detroit Tigers are still holding on to 1st place in the AL. Only the Washington Senators and New York Yankees gained any ground over the last 10 days. The Minnesota Twins had led the AL since May 15th before Detroit overtook them 2 weeks ago. The Twins have kept pace with the Tigers since then and are still in 2nd, 1/2 a game out of the top spot. The Cleveland Indians dropped a spot in the Standings after going 2-8 the last 10 games.
LA's Leon Wagner still leads the AL in HR(35) and RBI(84). Brooks Robinson (.359 BA) of the Baltimore Orioles is still battling with Boston's Pete Runnels (.354 BA) for top hitter in the league. Minnesota's Camilo Pascual (16-2, 2.76 ERA, 146 K's) is still the top rated pitcher in the AL. New York's Ralph Terry (14-3, 2.45 ERA, 102 K's) is challenging Pascual for that honor.

1962 NL Standings and League Leaders

July 20, 1962

The tightly contested race for the Pennant continues in the NL. The Pittsburgh Pirates are currently in the top spot in the league. 8 teams still have a shot at the pennant and the top 5 teams are within 5 games of each other.  Only the Chicago Cubs and New York Mets look to have no shot at it. Both those teams have been truly awful this season. The Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies have been the most overperforming teams, and the Los Angeles Dodgers have been the most underperforming.

1962 NL Game Stories

July 18, 1962

The pitchers were really dealing in the 4 games played today in the NL. Three of the games ended in shutouts and the 4th saw the losing team score just 1 run. The best pitched game also had one of the toughest breaks for the winning pitcher. Houston's Bob Bruce carried a no-hitter into the 9th inning only to see Philadelphia's Tony Gonzalez single with 2 outs. Bruce finished with a 1-hit shutout as the Colt 45's defeated the Phillies 2-0. LA's Don Drysdale threw a 4-hit shutout in a 5-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. SF's Juan Marichal threw a 6-hit shutout in the Giants 2-0 win over the Milwaukee Braves. For Marichal it was his 15tth Win of the season. Cal Koonce got the victory in the Cubs 7-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the only game played that saw the losers score a run.
