The 1962 MLB season pauses now for the All Star Game to be played tomorrow at Washington's D.C. Stadium. It will be the first of two All Star Games this year. The 2nd game will be played July 30th at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
At the break my Detroit Tigers have just overtaken the Minnesota Twins for 1st place in the AL. The Twins have been on an extended losing streak going 1-9 in their last 10 games. Meanwhile, the Tigers were 7-3 and that is what allowed Detroit to move into 1st by 1/2 game. Most every team in the AL has benefited from Minnesota's struggles. The 3rd place Washington Senators, who have been the biggest surprise in the AL this season, moved within 5.5 games of the top spot by going 8-2. Bob Johnson (.339 BA, 3rd in the AL) and Chuck Hinton (.336, 4th in the AL) have led the way for Washington. My Tigers have been led by Rocky Colavito (24 HR, 78 RBI), and Norm Cash (26 HR, 60 RBI). The Twins have been led by Camilo Pascual (15-2, 2.93 ERA, 126 K's) and Harmon Killebrew (25 HR, 76 RBI).
The 4th place Cleveland Indians have been playing under the radar, quietly staying in the race with their good play. Rounding out the 1st division teams, the New York Yankees have been underperforming this season but look like they're finally turning things around. The Yankee's pitching has been in the top 3 all season and their hitting is finally starting to produce. Pitcher Ralph Terry has had a fine season (12-3, 2.55 ERA, 95 K's) and Elston Howard (.294, 16 HR, 47 RBI) has provided consistent offense.
The Los Angeles Angels have been powered by Leon Wagner (34 HR and 79 RBI, both tops in the AL) and Lee Thomas (.299, 19, 56). Boston's Pete Runnels is 2nd in the league with a .351 BA while Baltimore's Brooks Robinson is 1st at .357. So even the fans of 2nd division teams have something to cheer about.
I've got to very happy with my Detroit Tigers standing in the league. They're overperforming by 9 games and have the 2nd best run production in the AL. But their pitching continues to be at or near the bottom in the league. I don't know if they can continue to pound out Wins. Moving Hank Aguirre into the Starting rotation looks to be a good move and he should be able to help overcome the poor performance by Frank Lary this year. But that will leave Terry Fox and Ron Nischwitz as the only reliable pitchers in the bullpen. I'm hoping Sam Jones comes around. Looking forward to the 2nd half of this 1962 season!
