1962 AL Game: Bal. @ Det. Tigers Move into tie for 1st

July 7, 1962

The Detroit Tigers got a very well pitched game from veteran Sam Jones and the fans got a teeth clenching 4-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. The win, combined with Minnesota's loss to New York today, moved the Tigers into a 1st place tie with the Twins. Jones has struggled all season in the bullpen and now as a Starter, but he threw his best game of the season today. He gave up a homerun to Boog Powell in the 1st inning but then shut down the Orioles until the 9th inning striking out 11 in the game. Obviously tired entering the 9th, manager Bob Sheffing stuck with Jones mainly because he had struck out 6 in a row. When Jones walked the lead off man in the 9th he was replaced with Ron Nischwitz. But that move immediately backfired when the rookie Powell hit a 2-run bomb, his 2nd homer of the game. Jim Gentile followed that with a double and that was all for Nischwitz. Terry Fox came on and gave up an infield hit to Jackie Brandt. After Brandt stole 2nd, the Orioles had runners on 3rd and 2nd with no outs. Detroit pulled the infield in and got a groundball to 1st from Brooks Robinson that the runners had to hold on. Fox then struck out Gus Triandos and got Jerry Adair on a lineout to ss Fernandez, who made a great catch, to end the game. Everyone in the ballpark let out a collective sigh of relief when the Tigers walked off  the field with the big victory and a piece of 1st place.

Catcher Mike Roarke had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Sam Jones reeled off a total
of 11 strikeouts at Tiger Stadium where the Detroit Tigers beat the Baltimore
Orioles by the score of 4 to 3.

Jones(1-3) was solid in the win. He didn't allow much, just 4 hits and 1 walk
in 8 innings seeing his ERA drop from 5.12 to 4.63. Baltimore made it
exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

Jones was helped out by Terry Fox who recorded his 12th save. Chuck
Estrada(7-6) took the loss. The Detroit fans were thrilled by the
performance put forth by Jones, but it was clearly his strikeouts that they
enjoyed most. 'When he reached 10 strikeouts the fans showed him their
appreciation with a loud cheer.' Bob Scheffing said following the game.
