1962 MLB Season Preview

While waiting for the Strat-O-Matic (SOM) 1962 baseball players cards to arrive I've been busy doing research and setting up the BaseBall2020 computer version in preparation for replaying the 1962 MLB season. As usual I'll be managing the Detroit Tigers and will try to improve on their 85-76 record and 4th place finish in the AL. I'll be using the actual starting pitchers for each game as well as the other starting 8 players. The only liberty I sometimes take is rearranging the actual batting order.
In the actual 1962 MLB season the Tigers were expected to challenge the dominating New York Yankees for the American League (AL) Pennant. Detroit won 101 games in 1961 but it was still not enough to dethrone the 109 game winning Yankees. New York's Roger Maris (61) and Mickey Mantle (54) chased Babe Ruth's homerun record (60) in the '61 season. Because of Mantle's injuries during the season, only Maris succeeded in setting a new record. They're expected to lead the Yankees once again to an AL Pennant. Detroit has outstanding players such as Al Kaline, Rocky Colavito, Norm Cash, Jim Bunning, Hank Aguirre, and Terry Fox on the team to challenge New York.  The Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox 'were predicted' to be top teams in the AL. But it was the 2nd year "new teams" in the league, Minnesota (relocated from Washington) and Los Angeles, that proved to be actual contenders.
In the National League (NL), last years Pennant winning Cincinnati Reds will be challenged by Los Angeles, San Francisco, Pittsburgh and Milwaukee in my replay. In 'real life' the SF Giants caught the LA Dodgers on the last day of the season. San Francisco then defeated the Dodgers in a 3-game playoff series to claim the 1962 NL Pennant. 1962 also saw the addition of the New York Mets and Houston Colt .45s to the NL. Both leagues now have 10 teams competing for the Pennant.
To conclude, I'm looking forward to guiding the Detroit Tigers to a better finish and having good pennant races in both leagues during my 1962 asplayed replay.

Here were the actual final 1962 MLB Standings:

1962 World Series Wrap Up

 October 12, 1962

The Detroit Tigers are the 1962 World Series Champions! Detroit won The Series 4 games to 2 over the San Francisco Giants. They did it just as they won during the regular season: Hitting for power, scoring in bunches and getting just enough pitching to win games.

Chico Fernandez was named World Series MVP. He was an offensive juggernaut and fielded his position flawlessly. Here is his stat line for The Series:

1962 World Series Game 6

 October 11, 1962

Game 6 of the 1962 World Series at Candlestick Park was overflowing with fans hoping to root their hometown Giants on to a win. The Detroit Tigers, up 3 games to 2, were sending Don Mossi to the hill while San Francisco was starting 19 game winner Billy O'Dell. After 3 scoreless innings the Tigers were first to strike. With 2 outs Norm Cash and Chico Fernandez hit back-to-back homeruns. The Tigers threatened to add more but Willie Mays threw out Steve Boros at the plate and the inning ended with Detroit on top 2-0. In the bottom of the 4th, SF evened the score when Jim Davenport singled home 2 runs.
In the bottom of the 5th the Giants put runners on 1st and 3rd with 1 out when Tiger manager Bob Scheffing decided to pull Mossi with righthanded batters Felipe Alou and Willie Mays due up. Hard throwing rookie Fred Gladding who hadn't appeared in The Series yet came into the ballgame. Gladding proceeded to strikeout both Alou and Mays to preserve the 2-2 score. In the top of the 6th Detroit got a solo homerun from Chico Fernandez, his 4th of The Series, and took a 3-2 lead.
San Francisco really got things going offensively when they scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th to take a 6-3 lead. The Giants had 4 hits in the inning including back-to-back homers from Alou and Mays. Stu Miller came into the game in the top of the 8th hoping to finish it for SF. But Detroit had other ideas, scoring 3 runs on 3 hits and a big throwing error by leftfielder Harvey Kuenn. The Giants were held scoreless in the bottom of the 8th and the game entered the 9th inning tied at 6.
Bobby Bolin came in to start the 9th for San Francisco and after getting pinch hitter Bob Farley to flyout Dick McAuliffe singled. McAuliffe moved up to 2nd on a Billy Bruton groundout and then took 3rd on a passed ball. Al Kaline then came through with a clutch base hit into leftfield and Detroit had the lead 7-6. Terry Fox, who had gotten hit hard in his last appearance, came in to try and close out the game for the Tigers. Things didn't start well for Fox when he walked the first batter, Ed Bailey, and then gave up a single to Kuenn. Alou flied out for the 1st out and Mays came up to the plate with 2 on and 1 out. Fox got Mays to hit a sharp grounder to ss Fernandez who started a 6-4-3 double play. The Tigers had won the ballgame 7-6 and the World Series 4games to 2!

The DETROIT TIGERS are the 1962 WORLD CHAMPIONS!!

1962 World Series Game 5

 October 9, 1962

Detroit's Jim Bunning and San Francisco's Jack Sanford faced off in Game 5 of the 1962 World Series with The Series tied 2-2. The Giants struck first when Tom Haller homered off Bunning in the top of the 4th inning for a 1-0 SF lead. In the bottom of the 4th with 2 outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Sanford intentionally walked Norm Cash to face Chico Fernandez. The moved backfired when Fernandez came through with a clutch bases clearing double. Detroit led 3-1.
In the bottom of the 5th Detroit sent 9 men to the plate scoring 5 runs on 2 hits. Mike Roarke led off with a walk and Haller threw wild on Bunning's sacrifice bunt attempt. Dick McAuliffe came up with runners on 1st and 2nd and blasted a 3-run homer into the rightfield seats. Detroit led 6-1. Sanford's day was over and Billy Pierce came in to pitch for SF. Pierce walked the first batter he faced, Billy Bruton, before striking out Al Kaline. Rocky Colavtio was up next he clubbed a 2-run shot into the upper deck in leftfield. Detroit led 8-1. Bunning was on cruise control until the 9th when he tired and ended up being charged with 3 runs scored. SF out hit the Tigers 8-6 but Detroit wins Game 5 8-4 and takes a 3-2 Series lead.
The teams will now head back to San Francisco for the rest of The Series. Billy O'Dell is scheduled to start Game 6 for SF while Don Mossi will start for Detroit.

1962 World Series Game 4

 October 8, 1962

Game 4 of the 1962 World Series started out with a bang as both the San Francisco Giants and Detroit Tigers scored 2 runs in the 1st inning. The Giants had 5 base hits in the top of the 1st off  Detroit starter Hank Aguirre to score their 2 runs. Only a Willie Mays doubleplay prevented more damage for the home team. The Tigers got their 2 runs off Giant's starter Juan Marichal on a single by Dick McAuliffe, a triple from Billy Bruton and a groundout by Al Kaline. The way The Series had gone so far had many fans thinking another slugfest was about to happen.
In the bottom of the 3rd Al Kaline hit a 2-run homer and Detroit led 4-2. Aguirre settled in after that 1st inning and he would hold the Giants off the scoreboard until the 9th. Detroit got a 2-run homer from Rocky Colavito in the 7th inning and the Tigers had a 6-2 lead. Aguirre allowed San Francisco to score a run in the 9th before he shut the door for a complete game 6-3 Win.
Game 5 in Detroit tomorrow will see SF's Jack Sanford and the Detroit's Jim Bunning start with The Series tied a 2 games apiece.
